Priva takes control at Addiewell prison

Addiewell prison in West Lothian features a BMS supplied by Priva Building Intelligence and installed by Campbell Control Systems. A consortium led by Kalyx was responsible for the design, construction, management and financing of this 700-place prison for the Scottish Prison Service.

Unusually, the ventilation system will remain under the control of the BMS should there be a fire, demonstrating the growing confidence in modern building-management systems.

Each of the four buildings making up the prison is served by dedicated condensing boilers supported by variable-speed pumps. The ventilation system includes heat wheel and heat-reclaim systems.

In the residential wings, the BMS manages the gas-fired condensing boilers, comprising a lead boiler and two lag boilers serving the LTHW constant-flow heating circuit.

Six AHUs serving these wings have thermal wheels controlled by signals from the supply-air temperature controls, air-inlet temperatures and extract-air temperatures from the cells. The temperature off the thermal wheels is controlled by varying their speed.

Consumption figures from gas, water and electricity meters are monitored by the BMS, and excessive use is flagged to the system operator for further investigation.

The prison is considering using the analytical power of the Priva BMS to establish a system of planned preventive maintenance.
