Hycrome takes a shine to radiant heating

Replacing steam radiators with decentralised radiant heating in this factory in Burnley has transformed comfort conditions.
Decentralising the heating in a 6000 m2 factory in Burnley has transformed comfort compared with what was previously provided by central boiler plant supplying steam to radiators around the building. The 30-year-old factory is owned by Hycrome (Europe) Ltd, a specialist in surface treatment and manufacturing for the petrochemical and aerospace engineering industry. Stephen Kelly, a director of Hycrome, explains, ‘The whole system was approaching the end of its life and had become very inefficient. Some steam radiators also kept breaking down. The time was right to look at decentralisation.’ The new heating is divided into six zones using AmbiRad Vision radiant heaters installed by Integrated Mechanical of Ripponden in Yorkshire. There are 14 VSXE heaters, which appear on the Energy Technology List. They are installed in the 10 m-high roof and positioned to avoid high-level cranes. Radiant heating is particularly appropriate in this type of factory, which has extract fans to remove airborne contaminants. The project, including relaying existing gas pipework, was carried out without interrupting production.
